Software Skills

Being able to configure Cisco routers and switches is a highly sought after skill in the IT world. But as a network engineer that isn’t the whole story.

You need to be able to get a router out of the box and load an image on it. You need to be able to cable it into your network and then perform an initial configuration. After that you need to be able to back up your configs via TFTP or SSH across the network to your server.

The story doesn’t end there though. You need to be able to recover the router in case of disaster as well as reinstall the configuration as well as in the event of lost or forgotten passwords.

Having your own home lab means you can do all of this in a safe environment.
